If you have trained outside the EU/EEA and are applying to register as a nurse or midwife in the UK, you will need to meet all of the criteria outlined within this document before you are registered to practice in the UK.


Who is suitable to apply:

  • If you are trained outside the UK, you are already in the UK and you want to register with the NMC and you need a sponsor license
  • If you are already trained in the UK and are newly qualified and you need a sponsor license
  • If you trained outside of the Eu and EEA and you want to apply to be registered with the NMC and you need a sponsor licence
  • If you are trained outside EU and EEA and you want to register with the NMC but you don't need a sponsor license to remain or work in the UK   

English Language Requirements

We accept two language tests as evidence of your ability to communicate effectively in English.


IELTS international English Language Test System

To meet the English language requirements, you will need to obtain an International English Language Test (IELTS) score of at least 7.0.

Before you can apply for the NMC you must have a minimum score of 7.0 and at least 6.5 in the writing section and at least 7 in the reading, Listening and speaking sections

  • Overall Score of 7

IELTS indicator tests are not acceptable.


OET Occupational English Test

To meet the English Language requirements, you will need to obtain

  • ·        At Least a grade C+ in the writing section, and
  • ·        At least a grade B in the reading, listening and speaking sections



The Test of competence will consist of the CBT and OSCE

CBT – The CBT is split into two parts:

  • Part A will cover Numeracy, 15 questions, 30minutes. Answers are one number answers, some will require units
  • Part B will cover clinical questions related to nursing or Midwifery. 100 questions, 2hours 30minutes. Multiple choice one of four answers. Questions cover full ranges of standards and all levels of Blooms taxonomy. All nursing tests are 90% generic and 10% field specific


OSCE – The New OSCE has 10 stations to assess additional skills as well as your values and behaviours and evidence based practice.  You have up-to 2hours and 45minutes to complete the stations. The 10 stations are split as follows

  • 4 Stations APIE, Assessment Planning, Implementation and Evaluation
  • 6 Stations, 2 pairs of 2 skills, 1 professional values and 1 critical appraisal


The stations are scenarios designed to replicate encounters you may face when you assess, plan carry out and evaluate care. You will visit each station within a set time frame before you move onto the next station. Assessors mark against a list of criteria, Demonstrated, Partially demonstrated not demonstrated.

OSCE test providers

There are 5 approved partners to deliver the Objective Structured Clinical Examination from Feb 2022 onwards

  • Oxford Brookes University
  • University of Northampton
  • Ulster University
  • Leeds Teaching Hospitals
  • Northumbria University


Bookings at Leeds Teaching Hospitals and Northumbria University will be accepting bookings from December 2021. By increasing the number of test sites capacity is improved for those taking the OSCE and will speed up registrations to the NMC register.

Identity checks

You are required to attend a face-to-face identification interview at the test centre on the day of you OSCE exam.

At the identification interview, you are required to produce all of your original documents submitted earlier. NMC will verify your previous registrations to ensure the validity at which point a photograph will be taken for internal records.


Please note the NMC cannot issue with a PIN or place you on the register until you have met all of the requirements of this identification check.


Please do not attempt to make an identity check appointment until the NMC have made contact with you.
